To the Beloved Poet

 

Snow is falling, soft and white,

Turning the world to dazzling light,

On tin roofs, so cold and bare,

On ivy walls once green with care.

 

Snow descends from heaven high,

Revealing truth we can’t deny.

The world was pure, so bright, so beautiful,

 

And snow reminds us how to see.

Poet Lee Kuei-shien, with words so bright,

Wrapped the world in verse so light,

Like falling snow, his gentle art

Brought warmth and wonder to the heart.

 

But now he's gone, his voice is still,

Yet Rivers flow beyond our will.

The Tamsui glides, its waters roam,

Yet never can it drink what’s gone.

 

 

그리운 시인에게

 

눈이 내리네, 하얗고 부드럽게,

세상을 찬란한 빛으로 물들이네.

차갑고 텅 빈 양철 지붕 위에도,

푸르게 자랐던 담쟁이 벽 위에도.

 

하늘 높이서 눈이 내리네,

부정할 수 없는 진실을 새기네.

세상은 원래 맑고 아름다워,

눈은 우리에게 그것을 가르쳐 주네.

 

리쿠이셴 시인, 밝은 언어로 세상을 노래한 시인,

그의 시는 세상을 감싸는 부드러운 리듬.

내리는 눈처럼 따뜻한 그의 예술,

마음속에 경이와 온기를 채우네.

 

그러나 이제 그는 떠나고, 그의 음성은 멈추었네,

그러나 강물은 우리 뜻과 달리 흐르네.

담수이 강은 유유히 흘러가지만,

다시금 같은 물을 머금을 순 없네.

 

Biography

Poet Dr. Kang Byeong-Cheol is a Korean author and poet, born in Jeju City, South Korea, in 1964. He began writing in 1993, publishing his first short story, "Song of Shuba," at the age of twenty-nine. He released a collection of short stories in 2005 and has since won four literary awards and published more than eight books. From 2009 to 2014, he served as a member of the Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International. Additionally, he worked as an editorial writer for Jemin Ilbo, a newspaper in Jeju City, South Korea.

Dr. Kang holds a PhD in Political Science and currently serves as the Vice President of the Korean Institute for Peace and Cooperation and the Vice President of Jeju PEN. Moreover, he is the founding President of the Korean Association of World Literature.

강병철 박사는 대한민국 제주 출생(1964년)으로, 한국의 작가이자 시인이다. 그는 1993년 창작을 시작하였으며, 스물아홉의 나이에 단편소설 「슈바의노래」를 발표하였다. 2005년 단편소설집을 출간한 이후, 네 차례의 문학상을 수상하고 여덟 권 이상의 저서를 출간하였다.

2009년부터 2014년까지 국제 PEN 클럽 투옥작가위원회(WiPC) 위원으로 활동하였으며, 또한 제주 지역 신문인 제민일보의 논설위원으로도 활동하였다. 정치학 박사 학위를 보유하고 있으며, 현재 한국평화협력원(Korea Institute for Peace and Cooperation) 부원장으로 재직 중이다. 더불어 한국세계문학협회의 창립 회장과제주펜의 부회장을 맡고 있다.
